Michael J. Black

Michael J. Black is the Managing Partner of Burns & Black PLLC and has practiced law since 1983. With over 40 years of legal experience, he is widely respected for his dedication to justice, public service, and professional excellence.

Michael’s practice spans complex federal and state litigation, mediations, arbitrations, commercial and construction law, insurance defense, real estate, probate, business, and consumer law. He is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Federal and Fifth Circuits, and multiple U.S. District Courts. He is also an active member of the Federal Bar Association – San Antonio Chapter.

A graduate of St. Mary’s University School of Law, he began his career as a briefing attorney for U.S. Magistrate Judge Jamie C. Boyd, followed by service as an Assistant Bexar County Criminal District Attorney. He joined his current firm’s predecessor in 1986 after gaining experience in insurance defense and state litigation.

Michael is a Past President of the San Antonio Bar Association and a Past Chair of the San Antonio Bar Foundation. He is a Life Fellow of both the Texas and San Antonio Bar Foundations and has received multiple awards, including two Presidential Citations from the State Bar of Texas.

He has contributed to legal ethics and procedural reform through service on the State Bar’s grievance committees, disciplinary rules committees, and the Texas Supreme Court Task Force on justice court procedures.
